The town of Somerton was established
in Saxon times, and is often described as the ancient capital
of Wessex. There is considerable modern development and the population
and town are still growing. |
It has an active community which
boasts two schools, (our own and a junior school), a wealth of
shops and local businesses, six churches and seven public houses.
An Arts Festival, a Science Week and the Pantomime are traditionally
celebrated each year. There is a light industrial area on the
outskirts and employment opportunities are good with Yeovil, Yeovilton
Air Base and Taunton all within commuting distance. Situated close
to the Somerset Levels, Wells, Glastonbury and Langport it is
regarded as a popular tourist centre. |
The original school buildings
were built in 1965 and extended and remodeled in 1989 to provide
four classrooms, two halls, two offices, a computer suite, a medical
room and facilities for disabled children. Our staff room and
history/geography resource area is due to be rebuilt in the coming
year. In addition to our sports ground and two large playgrounds
we have also created a wildlife garden, an adventure playground,
a structured play area and a new spiritual garden. |
The school roll varies slightly
from year to year, around 120, and most of our children are drawn
from the local town. We have a teaching head, four other classroom
teachers, a generous complement of classroom assistants and other
support staff. |
